Here's my situation, I'm an former Jarhead thinking about going into the National Guard as an avionics tech. I was a PP Mech in the Marines and after I got out I've been working as an avionics/A&P technician for the last five years several airlines. I've done everything from run wiring to troubleshooting systems. Recruiter told me I could CASP into avionics (35Q), but was wondering if it would be better to go to AIT. Would they teach me anything new, would it help for promotions etc.....? I'm also about five classes away from my AAS in Electronics. Just wondering how hard AIT is and how in depth of eletronics and math go. My roommate in the Marine Corps was Avionics and he told me of horror stories of guys washing out and being put into other MOS's. I don't want to go and then by the slight chance I wash out they make me a grunt and send me to IRAQ to fight on the front lines. I may be a Marine, but I swing with the wing if you know what I mean. I would appreciate any advice or thoughts.

Thanks

Hey,
I used to be a USMC Avi guy on F/A-18D's and AVI school is not all that bad... a good bit of math, lots of memorizing, but for the most part, if you can read and remember you'll be fine. You get lots of electronics theory(which in my opinion was the hard bit), but the rest is not so bad. There are some people who just can't pack in the data fast enough and wash out... but usually it came from lack of study time or excess of booze.... not intelligence issues... hope this helps,

Hey, thanks for the advice. I may be forgoing the National Guard for now. I've decided to go back to the Marine reserves as a COMM guy. I'll be heading to 29 Palms for training. I was just worried about the math as the highest level I took was trig and didn't know if you needed to know calculus. For my electronics degree trig was the highest level we had to have.
