Hi all,
Ok, so if anyone out there flys for the guard I implore you to respond.
Here is the SITREP:
I was in the Army for 6 years then went Air Guard. I got my eyes fixed and will be applying to fly for a ARNG unit. They want to bring me over as an enlisted member first, then board me. However, if, for some reason I do not pass, I am wondering if they have the right to keep me or if they will send me back to the air guard unit I was at.
Also, from the initial board to a flight school date, assuming an "average" order of merit list standing, does anyone have any input on how long it takes to actually go to flight school?
FURTHER (last one I promise), assuming that you have been selected and are just waiting for a slot to go to WOCS, IERW, etc., what are you doing on your drill weekends?
Thanks,
Big Eric |

I can't answer all of your questions, but here is what I have been told and is happening to me:
I spent 5 years enlisted in an armored cavalry unit, decided to go to OCS and am about to graduate from it. I opted to go to OCS in October of '04, but had to wait until January '05 for the new class to begin, I just went to my regular drills with my old unit and worked on Bradleys in the limbo time. I went to Pre-OCS in January of '05 and have been assigned to the OCS Battalion since. As far as WOCS is concerned, I'm sure the same would be true, and you would attend regular drills while awaiting your school date. I chose my branch about a month ago, since then I have had to meet and interview with the AVN Group in my state (SC), begin studying for the AFAST ( which I will take in a few weeks) and take a flight physical, other than that, I just completed the packet that I was instructed to complete. The one located on this website looks pretty much the same as far as information required. As far as I know, once you contract with the Army Guard, you will be required to fulfill your contract whether or not you pass commissioning/flight school/or whatever. When I receive my commission, I will at that time request my school date. From what I've been told , a new class begins every 2 weeks at Ft. Rucker, and take approximately 42 to complete ( depending on aircraft). Remember, the Army has a new program known as BOLC that all Officers ( not warrants) must attend. It is a 6 week course at Ft. Benning and completion is required before reporting to OBC. I have been told, depending on choice, I could go as early as 1 month after commissioning, to as many as 11 months after commissioning. Once you get that commission/appointment, you have alot more say in your school date. |
